Summary:
On a distant planet, there is a continent whose inhabitants have named the "Great Air Continent," and everyone there is born female. At 15 years old, they travel to a magical spring where they choose to remain a female or to become a male.
Unfortunately, they are at war; the country where the main characters live is invaded by the neighboring country, aiming to obtain their superior engine. Day by day, the situation gets worse. To intercept their attacks, they convert their two-seater planes originally used for ceremonial purposes, Simoun, into fighter planes. Also, they organize an air squad, "Call", which consists of "Mediums," young girls who have yet to choose their sex.
The girls who can operate "Simoun" are called "Simoun Siwula". They have special abilities and so they can choose when they shall become adults by themselves. However, since the war broke out, they've been forced to continue being pilots.
