Summary:
Alchemy is based on the idea of equal trade, you can't make something without sacrificing something else of equal value. Ed, and his brother Al, learn this the hard way, when trying to resurrect their mother. Ed loses his arm, while Al is in danger of disappearing completely. To save his brother Ed sacrifices his leg in order to bind his brother's soul into a suit of armor. Now the brothers are on a quest to restore each other back to their original forms.
