Frequently Asked Questions
What resolutions do you have? And can I use the wallpapers for my higher / lower resolution desktop?
All of the wallpapers are now available in 800x600 or 1024x768. Some of them are available in widescreen, which is 1280x768. The 1024x768 stretch to 1600x1200 with no problem. I know since that's what resolution I use.
How long have you been doing wallpapers and why did you start?
I've been making wallpapers on and off for about five years. They originally lived on darkthoughts.com but they got to be popular enough to warrant their own domain. The older wallpapers are pretty easy to spot since they have the darkthoughts.com tag on them and are pretty crappy.
The reason that I do all of my own wallpapers is that I don't really like what else is out there, with the exception of a few sites (weasl.net namely). I don't like having a cluttered desktop, so I don't want a wallpaper that's super ultra mecha busy. Most of the wallpapers out there look like the creators were trying to have a competition to see who could use the most photoshop filters...so these images tend to be a bit too much for my taste.
Who did all this sweet, sweet coding?
I do all of the design myself and get some help with php coding from my friend James at Animetrics.net
How big is the site?
There are currently around 600 wallpapers (or 1800 images) that total about 150mb.
Why do you hate site leechers so much?
I just do...I hate them sooo much (obscure Simpson's reference.) For one thing, there's no legitimate reason to want to download every version of every wallpaper on the site. For another thing, it's an excessive load on the server to have the ripping program slamming the Apache and MySQL servers. It's also unfair to have one person trying to monopolize the bandwidth of the server. So, anyone that I find leeching (and it's very easy to find them since they show up at the top of my daily usage list) will be banned from the site forever. Well, not totally banned...you can still get the html pages, you just can't view any of the images. So, yes, I go through the logs several times a day looking for site rippers and happily banning them.
I was thinking of making an anime / image site, how do I protect my content?
If you have any kind of site with images on it, you have to protect them from people being able to "hotlink" to them. Otherwise you'll soon find that you're providing the background images for all sorts of Xanga sites, and the avatars for all sorts of bulletin boards. The avatar people really suck because they usually will link to the 1024x768 which is displayed on the board at maybe 150x100. I put up a little page that will tell you how to protect your content here
